• Log4E clutters Eclipse Ganymede (3.4.x) log file [19 Jul 2008]

Log4E 1.3.2  produces error logs under Eclipse Ganymede:
    !MESSAGE Conflict for 'AUTOGEN:::de.jayefem.log4e.RootContribution/de.jayefem.log4e.ModifyAction':

No solution yet. However the logs are not critical and it seems that they don't have any effects. I'm working on it to get rid of them.

  • Massive problems with Eclipse Ganymede (3.4.x) [14 Jul 2008]

Log4E 1.3.1 does not work properly under Eclipse Ganymede.

Update to Log4E 1.3.2 or higher

  • Preview dialog is displayed behind the main eclipse window in Log4E 1.1.x:

The problem occurs only on Mac OS X (on JRE 1.4.2 and 1.5.0) and Eclipse 3.1.2. Any comments are appreciated!

Update to Eclipse 3.2 and the latest Log4E version.
  • Version 1.2.1/1.2.2 locks up Eclipse:

Adding logging to method or class fails and locks up Eclipse as follows: The dialog box with the "Operation in progress..." stays on the screen and pressing Cancel does not cancel the operation. The task has to be killed.

This problem occurs only if you've installed the plugin for the first time or used it in a newly created workspace. In this case the Log4E preferences are corrupted.

To fix them go to Window->Preferences->Log4E->Format and change these settings (without the braces):
    Delimiter (${delimiter}): " - "
    Delimiter within message (${delimiter}): " : "
    Return value description: "return value"
    And you're done.

    Alternative way:
You can find the preferences file in <workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.settings (to find out where your <workspace> is located use "File->Switch Workspace...")

The easiest way to fix the problem, is to delete the file
and install version 1.2.5 or higher. The file "de.jayefem.log4e.prefs" will be copied there after changing the default settings.

If you don't want to delete the preferences file (because you don't want to lose the Log4E preference changes you've already made), you need to modify the file "de.jayefem.log4e.prefs" manually. Therefore you have to append a space at the end of the line at these two properties:

  • Preferences not shown in Log4E Free 1.1.4:
de.jayefem.log4e_free_1.1.4.zip was corrupted. Please overwrite it with the latest download.
    • If Eclipse was started with the Bea JRockit JVM, Log4E 1.x does not work:
The solution is to start Eclispe with the JVM 1.4.x or above from Sun Microsystems. E.g.:
      eclipse.exe -vm C:\j2sdk1.4.x_xx\bin\javaw.exe
    • Plugin does not appear in context menu/preferences:
This could happen sometimes with Eclipse 3.1 when extracting the zip file of the Plugin directly.
The solution is to re-launch Eclipse with -clean option.
  • Log4E 0.6.6 does not work on WSAD 5.1.2
Log4E needs JDK 1.4. WSAD (which is based on Eclipse 2) seems to use the jre in the subdirectory of eclipse which is JDK 1.3. There seems no way to run Log4E 0.6.6 on WSAD.
The category "Profiles -> Templates" won't show up properly. So you aren't able to edit the log templates.
Log4E v0.5.5 works fine though (which is not that bad if you're using Log4j or Commons Logging).
Any suggestions and comments are appreciated.
